Cureva vs Medisafe (2026): What Canadian Users Need to Know

Medisafe became a fully paid app for users outside the US in 2026. Here is what changed, what that means for Canadian caregivers, and how Cureva compares feature by feature.

Medisafe became a fully paid app for users outside the United States on January 1, 2026. Cureva is built in British Columbia, sends a push alert to up to five family caregivers when a dose goes unconfirmed, and includes Eva, a companion who checks in daily and remembers what you tell her.

What changed with Medisafe's free tier

Medisafe is one of the best known medication reminder apps, and many Canadian families have relied on it. For users outside the US, that changed in 2026.

According to the Medisafe Help Center, 2026, Medisafe is now a fully paid app for users outside the United States, effective January 1, 2026. Premium costs $4.99 USD per month or $39.99 USD per year. If you are a Canadian family that relied on a free plan, check what your account now includes. Medisafe has not published a free tier outside the US on that page.

What moved to Medisafe Premium

Medisafe Premium includes unlimited medications, unlimited MedFriends and unlimited dependents, says the same Help Center article.

For families, MedFriend is the part of Medisafe that matters most. It is Medisafe's caregiver feature, which alerts a connected person when doses are missed, and Medisafe lists unlimited MedFriends as part of Premium.

None of this makes Medisafe a bad product. The team has to sustain the business somehow. But it does mean that families who chose Medisafe for its free plan should look again at what they now get.

Cureva vs Medisafe: full feature comparison

The table below covers the features that matter most to families managing an elderly parent's medications. Medisafe's Help Center describes one paid plan outside the US, so the free version column only shows what Medisafe says and reads Not listed where it says nothing. Check Medisafe's current plan details before deciding.

Where Medisafe is still the right choice

We will be honest here, because one-sided comparisons do not help anyone make a good decision.

Medisafe is a mature reminder app. The reminders, the drug interaction warnings, and the refill reminders are well established. Medisafe also has health trackers, a voice assistant, and progress reports. If you are a single adult managing your own prescriptions (no caregiver coordination needed, no elderly parent involved) Medisafe Premium is a reasonable choice.

Medisafe also has a longer track record, which means more community knowledge. If your primary pharmacy is a large US chain and you want built-in refill reminders that talk directly to their system, Medisafe may have better coverage there.

The Medisafe App Store listing, 2026 highlights drug-to-drug interaction warnings, which is genuinely useful for anyone starting a new medication. Cureva also checks your medicines against US FDA drug label text and flags a pair when one label names the other, but it says so when it cannot check, so Medisafe's approach may be more thorough for a quick check.

Where Cureva wins for Canadian families

The core difference is what happens after the reminder fires. A reminder app tells you when to take a dose and relies on you to log it. Medisafe's MedFriend can alert a connected person when a dose is missed. What Cureva adds is a daily conversation about how the person is feeling.

Cureva is built around a different question: is the person actually okay?

When a dose is due, Cureva sounds an alarm-style reminder, and the patient taps Taken or Skipped. That tap is saved with a timestamp and linked caregivers can see it. Separately, Eva, Cureva's health companion, sends a check-in each morning and asks how the person is feeling. If a dose goes unconfirmed after a short grace period, linked caregivers get a push alert rather than a summary the next morning.

The key difference in practice

A reminder app tells you a notification was delivered. Cureva shows whether the dose was logged, how your parent answered today's check-in, and whether there is anything the family should know. For adult children managing a parent's health from another city, that distinction matters every single day.

The Canadian angle matters more than it might seem. For health data (which includes medication names, dosing schedules, symptom logs, and vitals), where it is stored and which privacy law applies are worth checking in any app. Cureva is a Canadian company and is designed to support PIPEDA requirements. Its privacy policy explains what is collected and where it is processed.

There is also something to be said for a product built specifically for the Canadian experience. Provincial drug coverage, Canadian pharmacy chains, the reality that many Canadian families are spread across multiple provinces. These are contexts Cureva was designed inside.

How to switch from Medisafe to Cureva

Medisafe lets you export your medical history, according to its Help Center, but the migration is largely manual. For most users it takes about 15 minutes. Here is the practical path:

  1. Export what you can

In Medisafe, download your report or take screenshots of your medication list before cancelling. Note the name, dose, frequency, and instructions for each medication. This is your source of truth for re-entry.

  2. Download Cureva and start the free trial

The 7-day trial gives you full access to all features. You will not be asked for payment information until the trial ends. Use the trial period to rebuild your medication list and test the alerts with family members before cancelling Medisafe.

  3. Add medications and set schedules

Cureva's setup flow walks you through each medication: name, dosage, schedule, instructions, and special notes. Most users rebuild a full list of 5 to 8 medications in under 10 minutes. The patient profile is separate from the caregiver account, so each person enters their medications once and shares only what matters.

  4. Invite family caregivers

In the Family section, send invitations to up to 5 family members. They download the app and accept the invitation, no linked accounts, no shared passwords. Once connected, they see the medication list, dose history, and receive a push alert when a dose goes unconfirmed. You choose what each person can see.

  5. Run both apps in parallel for one week

Keep Medisafe running for the first week of your trial so nothing falls through the cracks during the transition. Once you are confident in Cureva's alerts and check-ins, cancel Medisafe from your device's subscription settings.

What does Eva actually do during a check-in?

The word "AI" gets used loosely in health apps, so it is worth being specific about what Eva does and does not do.

Eva sends a check-in each morning by first name. She asks how the person is feeling that day and can refer back to things they told her before, such as a headache mentioned earlier in the week. Patients can answer by typing or by dictating with the microphone. Eva does not speak replies aloud.

Eva does not diagnose. She does not prescribe. She does not replace a doctor. What she does is keep notes and pass them on. The Health Brief pulls together adherence, vitals, symptoms and questions saved for the doctor, and a doctor-ready PDF can be emailed to a saved doctor or shared by a secure link that expires after 72 hours. Out-of-range blood pressure, glucose or heart rate readings also send a push to you and to caregivers allowed to see vitals.

Medisafe is built around reminders, health trackers and reports. Cureva adds a daily check-in and a family view of what the person logs.

The Canadian privacy case, in plain terms

When you enter a parent's medication list into an app, you are entering a detailed profile of their health conditions. Lisinopril indicates cardiovascular disease. Metformin indicates type 2 diabetes. Donepezil indicates cognitive decline. A medication schedule is, in effect, a medical record.

Under PIPEDA, Canadians have specific rights over how that data is collected, used, and disclosed. Where an app stores your parent's data matters, so ask any app you use where it keeps health data.

Cureva was started in British Columbia. Because Eva uses AI services, read the privacy policy to see which providers handle your data.
